She misses Sasuke and Naruto fighting over how to straighten the tent out and wishes she wouldn’t carry so much baggage, unable to look her husband in the eye without shivering in fear. Sarada will never know the joy of camping out with her teammates, not like Sakura did and sometimes, she even understands what Kakashi must have felt like, staring at the Memorial Stone.

A writer’s Dry January

I must have mentioned a couple of times here that I was on a posting cleanse from AO3. Meaning I could write as much as I wanted to (initially, as I could) but I wouldn’t post anything until February.

Why, one might ask?

A friend told me sternly to get a grip and sit with my writing for a while. I didn’t actually intend to take their advice but as I tried to write something new and it flowed nicely, I thought to myself “I don’t want this to stop”. So I wrapped up the story, put it in a folder as “February Batch” and let it cook on a stove for a while.

Eleven stories later, almost twelve, I gotta say it was a good call.

Actually, I used to do that all the time back when I started to post actively. I’d write the fic in my corner, edit it on my own, and once it was complete and I, happy with it, only then would I post the thing.

It felt right that way and at some point I lost that little world of my own to an outlining frenzy where I didn’t see my projects through and kept thinking about posting. Obviously, that had to change.

Hence my accidental Dry January (for writers).

I’m glad I did. Writing was a breeze of fresh air all month. I think I ran into two major roadblocks that had more to do with the story structure than inspiration, and I surprised myself by taking breaks like, voluntarily? I’d just go “I wrote a lot today and I will write even more and better later so let’s just rest my eyes and reset my brain”. I didn’t only do this in between fics, at the end of the day too! I also sat myself down to read a book in between scenes of the same fic!

Not so long ago I was so afraid I’d stop writing altogether if I took a break that I wouldn’t be able to pick it up if I stayed away from my stories for too long. And that came from someone who picked up two to four years old WIPs before!

I even considered keeping this routine up for as long as possible (only posting things I wrote the month before) alas a lot of challenges I like (or even organized myself) run over February and I’ll have to write and post quickly to make the deadlines this month.

I’ll definitely keep the experience of this no-posting January in mind though and try to slow down when it comes to my output on AO3. I wrote with low expectations, but so much fun! That’s what I want writing to feel like.

So yeah, I’ve got a bunch of fics to edit and a fanwork up on AO3 right now, check it out ;)

I wrote for Arcane’s Caitlyn/Vi! So new fandom and new pairing ;) I’m really excited about it too because it’s one of my goals this year (write more, in a better mindset, for femslash pairs).

The story is the first of a series of unrelated oneshots for a writing event Fresh Femslash Salad Bar so it only drives the point further home. The fic was very fun to write, I wrapped it up in just one day too so that’s double win for me (I can’t say spending one entire day on the same story is anything new to me tho :p).

I even decided to include the fandom and pairing to my fandomtrumpshate offers this year round so yeah, great news ♥

My Bookmarks Guide

Anything in my (AO3) bookmarks is a rec as far as I’m concerned. I saved it because I knew I’d want to share it with someone else later down the line (I might even know with whom yet)!

My Fandom Prime

I debated the topic of this one for a long time. It felt like bragging, but after all, isn’t it a little bit about bragging when you mention a personal win? I am proud of it after all and I don’t see the point of mentioning it if I’m going to downplay it.

So let’s get into it, and explain why it’s such a big deal for me.

I joined Fandom Trumps Hate two years in a row and the first time went relatively well, a couple of people donated and obviously, it stroked my ego. I didn’t go completely unnoticed, it’s always nice.

The second year? Damn, the bids kept coming.

I woke up after the deadline to a couple of hundred bucks worth of donation, twice over because I agreed to make a fanwork for the second highest bidder too.

The thing is, it doesn’t sit well with me to monetize my fanfics, and the only reason I joined FTH was to raise money and awareness to causes dear to my heart. The anti-abortion laws and threats to trans rights specifically motivated me to join.

It did it for the money, but not for me, if that makes sense.

Still, someone placed a bid so high on my offer, I can’t help but think “that’s how much money I can raise. That’s how much money I could decently expect for my work in such circumstances.”

Especially since I don’t think I was in my fandom prime last year.

Perhaps I was.

I’ve mentioned how I’m working on myself to not let numbers define my worth and it’s probably going to be a recurring topic in my journal, but I’ll admit, that’s a big personal win for me. I might not even make half of that amount with my offers this year, but I did it once and it went to a good cause, which is more than I could have asked for when I signed up for the first time.

Tarot for introspection

I picked up tarot a little under a year ago. I had been meaning to get my hands on a deck and learn for a while, I’ve always found it fascinating and that day I walked into a store looking for anything but a deck.

The first thing I saw was a wide collection of decks on a shelf by the entrance. Since I had yet to get into tarot but still wanted to, I browsed through the more modern decks without really finding anything that clicked. Then, just as I was moving on to the books, Le Tarot des Petites Ames by Jeanne Bressand caught my eye.

It was love at first sight!

The modern design of the cards and the fairly extensive booklet explaining basic meanings as well as some spread ideas to draw the cards make learning so much easier. I took to drawing one card a day to memorize them better and watched a lot of videos to learn, within a month I was able to draw properly and analyze the cards that came up in a spread!

I was a bit addicted for a while there and had to limit myself to three times a day though x)

Next, I wanted to familiarize myself with the Rider-Waite deck since I had a (revisited) Tarot de Marseille, so I procured the Art Nouveau by Lunaea Weatherstone and Giulia F. Massaglia. The booklet that comes with this deck is short and to the point but by then I was confident enough to keep going without as much structure and I don’t regret it one bit.

I find it so soothing and grounding. I’ve gotten used to the more subtle cues in my Tarot de Marseille, and the straightforward, tough love of the Art Nouveau. I choose one or the other depending on the mood I’m in and the topic I’ll tackle that day and of course, some cards come back fairly often too.

Mostly, I use tarot as a self-discovery, introspection tool (it works for writing projects too!) and sometimes as a conversation starter with friends. That’s not my favorite part though, unless we’re already close and they’ve confided in me in the past.

I’d really like to delve into Shadow Work in the future, and I might try an oracle once I find one that speaks to me!

Five little pleasures of a writer’s life

The Serial Commenter: they comment as they read and usually make your day as they binge-read your fic in less than 24 hours. I love reading their thoughts from one chapter to the other and replying once they’re done, it’s so gratifying to get such an insight in their reading experience!

The Kudos Spam (affectionate): they browsed through half if not all your collection of oneshots and left kudos on several of those. Not all writers have their kudos notification email activated but I do and I just wanted to say I see you, and I appreciate you!

The (Writer) Friend: they already went feral in your DMs about everything they liked but they also leave a comment on AO3 because they know how much it means to you (to me). Adorable!

The Fic Rec: be it on Tumblr, a Discord server or any other social media platform, they mentioned your fic when someone asked for a rec, or because people wanted to read more of a concept you’ve also written, or for an event you already took part in and your fic is given as an example. The shout out is always welcome!

The Bookmark Note: they’re shy, or perhaps they use their bookmark as a rec list for anyone checking their profile, but they left the kindest words in the note and you usually stumble upon it by chance. How wonderful, how precious!

Starter pack: fanfic writer edition

Community; talk to people, ask about their interests, or for advice, everyone’s got something to say and it could be useful!

Search engines; from screencaps to scripts and anything you want to read about, including tutorials, it’s a (google) search away!

Wikis; for any fandom, they’re just such a great, organized resource

Youtube; from compilations to playlists and video essays, you can rewatch the original content to your heart’s content!

Tumblr; meta, giftsets, events, prompt lists, various resources… it’s a great fandom hub!

Pinterest; great for moodboards, not so great for copyrights.

Unsplash; great for moodboards and copyrights!

Dafont; to find the perfect font when making fanart.

Unilingual dictionary; great tool for non natives to grasp the specificities of a new word and learn it better.

Thesaurus; for synonyms and antonyms, although sometimes what you really need is a translator (yes I’m bilingual).

Google docs; I hate to promote it but the suggestion mode allows me to share the document with someone else and track the changes, it’s my go-to when beta-reading.

Generators (ao3 posting script, fantasy names, rhymes, maps, prompts, bingo cards…) make things easier on yourself and kick start your creativity!

A love letter to the Stargate verse

or why I love every iteration and spin off!

For context, I used to watch Stargate SG-1 with my mom, I literally grew up watching this show. It holds a special place in my heart and over the years it allowed me to bond with my mom on multiple levels.

I’ll have to admit I was a bit scared of the Wraiths in Stargate Atlantis as a young teenager and to this day they still give me the creeps but you know what? That’s the reason I love SGA. They switched the genre, but kept what made Stargate… Stargate. You know, the gate?

We still had the gates, except this time they were flown around in space.

We still had the powerful god-like entities but they were vampires instead of lizards.

We still had the foreign cultures and a vast diversity of people.

At its core, it’s everything I loved with SG-1, but in a different setting.

I’d even argue they did it better than SG-1 with the Ori, but I still loved that part of the series so it’s not a strong argument. If there is one thing I regret, it’s missing out on a Wraiths vs Goa’uld crossover!

Then you have Stargate Universe. It didn’t really catch my attention as an older teenager but I watched it again as an adult and I just loved how it took the opposition between the army and civils, trapped them in close quarters and let it simmer… with the gate still!

We still had the gate except this time it was crucial to go through to gather supplies.

We still had powerful god-like entities, except they were humans math geniuses, with their flaws, and you couldn’t get rid of them without ensuring your own destruction.

At its core, it’s still everything I loved with SG1 and SGA, but in another setting.

I’d even argue the political play was even more gut wrenching because of the isolation trope. Sure, it flopped because truly, the blue aliens weren’t a proper match for the Goa’uld and the Wraiths, but I think it was a logical next step at the time.

Having the setting be part of the intrigue (Atlantis the flying city, the ship itself) was also a nice twist from the base who could be invaded but not truly explored in the original series. I also appreciate how the cast was constantly a big hit, I loved every team and ensemble cast, their dynamics, their conflicts.

Sam Carter is one of the main strong female characters that shaped me as a person today.

I love that.

Who I wanna be

I requested a tarot prompt for getyourwordsout and didn’t know what to make of it in my current fanfic drafts. So I thought I’d talk about the process instead, as the cards really felt like they hinted at my mindset rather than anything else.

I’m on a self-imposed cleanse from posting on AO3, it became official mid-January but since then I wrote half a dozen fics and didn’t share them. I don’t intend to do so until at least next month.

It all started because I was on a Stargate SG-1 binge and talked to some friends about a rare-pair I love (which is Sam Carter / Ba’al). It suffers, like most rare-pairs, from a severe lack of fanfics online (although I have to say most of those are to my taste which is a blessing in itself). Obviously, my friends told me to write my own!

That’s when I realized I “lacked” ideas for it. I wouldn’t say it’s unheard of but the fact is, it’s been going on for a while. I used to daydream about fanfics all the time. I’d fall asleep mentally working on the next scene of my current WIP. At some point in the last couple of years, I stopped.

I’d still get the occasional idea and get into a frenzy to write it, but more often than not, I described the writing process as “painful”, a “bother”, like “pulling a tooth out” and I never thought I’d be this kind of writer.

I’m the kind of writer who replies “if it’s painful, maybe you shouldn’t do it at all”, usually.

Honestly, I’ve had my fair share of teeth issues, making an appointment to the dentist causes a lot of stress for me, so I should know better.

Anyway, eventually I did get an idea for Sam/Ba’al during a road trip so yey! I still got it! but a second problem made itself known: I just didn’t see the point of writing it (hence not browsing for ideas overall).

Isn’t that sad?

A lot of my inner turmoil regarding motivation and productivity comes from what I perceive as a lack of interaction with the fandom. Of course writing rare pairs, femslash or anything that strays too far outside of the box feels like a waste of time then.

It’s very frustrating to acknowledge that about myself, but I do have high expectations when it comes to hits and comments for my fanfic and whenever a story doesn’t meet them, I’m extremely disappointed (even though I still got some kind of feedback!).

My latest longer Sterek fic got relatively good stats, especially compared to my other fics in the fandom (second most popular!) but to me, it seems like it flopped dramatically. It makes no sense.

So after chatting some more with my friends, and I’ll keep the content of that meltdown private, one of them suggested I take some time to reacquaint myself with my writing, and to sit with it for a while.

I had no intention of doing so, mostly I wanted to clear out my WIP folder, yet mid-January I wrapped up a fic with relative ease and I thought to myself: I don’t need to post that.

So I won’t.

I wrote four fics over the weekend. I kept going. I hit a wall on a fic because the outline didn’t feel great but I figured it out, and none of it felt fucking painful. I’m having a blast, and I truly believe the cards sum it up perfectly.

Queen of Cups - Insightfulness, spirituality, compassion, empathy, instinct;

The Fool - Freedom, faith, inexperience, innocence;

Ace of Coins - Health, wealth, practicality, receiving.

I needed to recharge, to be kind to myself and to find some insight into my own spirituality, just so I could experience the utter delight of writing something once again, to do it freely, and to trust the process. Because it’s healthy, and the hits and kudos don’t define me, nor the story.

This isn’t who — or what — I want to be.

What I want is for someone to read my writing and say,

“I really needed this today. In this life. I’m glad I found you.”

Wishes and lists

I'm terrible at asking for what I want, so I had to browse through all the other wish lists for inspiration! Left a couple of comments of my own to grant a few wishes (surprisingly on the theme of recs, be it fanfic or public transportation), so I guess now I have no excuse not to go through with my wish list...

Speaking of wishes, my first is for more people to join in the Alex in Chains Fest (Alex Rider, on the theme of restraints)! I want the lists, I want the wishes granted, and I want the reblogs to promote the event lmao.

My second wish are more role reversals in the pairings I like, (Scorpia!Alex, MI6!Yassen, warlock!Alec, shadowhunter!Magnus...).

Heline. Art, fics, gifsets, fanmix... I'll take everything. I love them. They should come first, actually.

I'd love to find a writers group to talk writing with and/or a long term beta reader slash critic partner to work with. I don’t mean cheerleading, I really want to talk business ;)

I'd also like more shout out posts that actually put the spotlight on an author or a fic in particular rather than those generic, virtue signaling bullet points lists. Go big or go home, rec someone specific!

Finally, on a more personal note, my last wish is for Alex Rider season 3 to come out as soon as possible, a Nicole Scherzinger album, and to see CL live in Paris or London!

Goals for the coming year

That’s what brought me to Dreamwidth in the first place. I’m a firm believer in starting new habits towards the end of the year rather than the beginning, but I guess this is all about writing and I’ve been writing all year anyway, no matter how tedious it can be.

This year, I want to switch things up. Clearly, I’ve picked up some bad habits writing wise, be it the stats on AO3 making me feel like a fic flopped dramatically when it didn’t or not seeing the point of writing something if it’s not for someone else and that’s without mentioning my issues with length or word count when I get writing.

I want to set the bar low once again.

It’s the only thing that works after all. So I signed up for getyourwordsout because I keep reaching so high every year without even acknowledging all the hard work that goes into my writing. Sure, I’m having fun planning, outlining and revising, but at some point it became “the easy part” whereas drafting became “the hard part” and that’s not fair.

My expectations will always be high, but this time around I’m dropping the level of commitment to fun & easy. See how it goes.

AO3 — I’d like to complete The Mortal Instruments: Skyrim (Shadowhunters, Malec). It’s a collab and we posted 4 chapters already, but there are 11 written and about 15 planned. The fic has been going for a couple of years but it’s fully outlined and it’s a fun project so I want to see it through.

On a different note, I’d like to write more Teen Wolf overall, because Alex Rider blew up the stats and it doesn’t feel right, I should have more Teen Wolf works on my profile. I wonder what I’ll come up with!

It might be complicated since I signed up with Alex Rider for the Kill a character bingo, but I’ll figure something out!

I have, of course, a certain number of works in progress in my folders that I’d like to finally get to and post in time for some key dates, if not this year then the next. This is project WIPs Wrapped on Time for Christmas!

Dreamwidth — What will I use it for? I need to figure out where it stands between my tumblr blog and my AO3. I’m not really interested in cross-posting, and I was never interested in truly personal blogs or journals online. Which leaves space for meta, but I like to share it on tumblr more, and anything that I don’t necessarily want shared, but still accessible to anyone interested about my writing process and my thoughts on art I come across.

Also, I want a cute theme for my journal, so I’ll have to dig into customization tools over here!

Fandom Events — I’d like to take part in some, although not the same as before. So far, I’m running the Alex in Chains Fest on Tumblr for Alex Rider, which takes place over January and February.

I’d like to join another reverse bang perhaps, I liked that and it would give me a chance to interact with other fans and write “for” someone which is something I enjoy, I just don’t want it to be all there is to writing anymore.

On that note, I’m also contemplating offering two auctions for fandomtrumpshate, the first one for Alex Rider & Shadowhunters Femslash since it’s a smaller community, and the second for Shadowhunters and Teen Wolf, which are both big fandoms.

I haven’t decided, yet, whether I’ll run the (Y)Alex Rider Secret Santa again next year, but it’s something to keep in mind as well.

Femslash — I’m not (as far as I am aware) going to take part in Femslash February this year, but I do want more femslash for myself (to write and to read). I dived briefly into Caitlyn/Vi after watching Arcane and I absolutely loved the fics I read so I want to keep browsing this fandom for one, and interact with more femslash pairings over all.

Personal goals — I’d like to read some of the novels from my TBR pile and watch Teen Wolf season 4 & 5 at some point as well. I’ll keep watching new movies and shows over the year as well, but let’s just say some things take precedence!

I’d also like to complete my long, Sakura-centric fic for Naturo and perhaps translate it into English, depending on how much I decide to revise it.

Finally, if the inspiration comes, get back to some original fiction writing, although I’m not sure in which language yet. I’ll just… keep an open mind, it’s been a while and I think it would be a great way to switch things up indeed!

I mostly joined to pledge a modest 150k words to getyourwordsout because I’ve been stuck in a rut writing wise and I hope to make it flow again. Catching myself comparing writing to “pulling a teeth out” last year really should have been my warning that I needed to switch things up, so here I am!

My expectations are high, but they go both ways, I’m a hard working perfectionist ;)

I really miss the sense of community in fandom that I experienced during lockdown and I hope to build somewhat of a writing circle here as it does wonder for my productivity. Motivation wise, I’m fueled by passion and spite, which are mostly two extremes of the same spectrum if you ask me.

I'm a serial outliner and I hoard WIPs with more passion than a dragon. I also used the dragon metaphor regarding beta-reading for a while but a wonderful, mind opening experience during a mini-bang changed that for me. I met incredible people and my fics came out transformed so I really hope to find some critic partners this year.

I’m not sure what to expect on here so let’s just say this is a Journal in Progress for now. Some of my low pressured goals are to write more femslash even if I don’t plan to take part in Femslash February this year, offer two separate auctions to fandomtrumpshate, potentially join a fandom event such as a bang, and try my hand at poly ships!

I’m an early bird so my favorite time of the day to write is in the morning, even though I can stay up late writing when I’m on a roll and damn do I want to be on a roll more often than not. I was reluctantly converted to Google Docs and wouldn’t know what to do without it nowadays. I also love lists and spreadsheets in general, but as we say in French je me soigne !

I’m currently active in Shadowhunters/The Mortal Instruments (Malec, Heline), Teen Wolf (Sterek) and Alex Rider (Yalex), however I can and probably will be caught writing het at times.

Reading wise, I dabble in some more fandoms, including but not limited to: Harry Potter (anything involving Hermione), Stargate (anything involving Sam and a certain Tok’ra or Goa’uld), Naruto (as long as a kunoichi or an Uchiha is involved count me in), A:TLA (I’ll read most things but I do have a soft spot for Jet/Zuko), Arcane (Caitlyn/Vi my loves), Good Omens, Kinnporsche (specifically KimChay), Merlin (only Merwaine) and Daredevil (Mattimir in particular).

I’ve started watching Supernatural and we know where I’m headed already, don’t we?

Honorable mention to Crazy Ex Girlfriend and Hadestown because I love music (sample of artists I listen to: Beast/Highlight, 2NE1, Little Mix, 5SOS, Tonight Alive, The Kooks, The 1975, Tom Grennan, Nicole Scherzinger, basically anything with pop or rock in the name).

My other hobbies when I’m not writing or reading are often done with music, although not always. Every now and then I’ll catch up on pop culture from a decade ago, my recent deep dive brought Taylor Swift to my top 1 on Spotify wrapped, along with Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus. I also go to the movies and stream shows a lot during the week!

I spend a lot of time playing Pokémon and Legend of Zelda every year, mostly over my summer vacation. I like to light a candle for a tarot reading (I acquired Lunaea Weatherstone and Giulia F. Massaglia’s Art Nouveau deck which I love dearly).

I drink way too much coffee and barely enough tea. I like to hang out at my friends’ places or go out for drinks but I loathe having company over unless they’re internet friends of mine. I’m a foster family to an elderly cat, so I’m often at the vet’s or monitoring his health as he takes medication twice a day, but he makes it all worth it.

I hit the gym three times a week, early morning, and I hope to run a 6km (4 miles) marathon by the end of the year (both to lose weight and because I’m a spiteful dragon). I love plane rides, especially when they take me to an English speaking country. I would also love to go on a road trip with a good playlist!
